I want to share with you our trip to Compton Verney. With kids (well, with our kids, anyway), a trip to a museum or gallery is not one we often embark upon and not one we do without expecting some degree of failure. Our kids are just not the museum-going kind of kids, come to think of it, neither are we, so I guess that offers some explanation.
But we do enjoy a good day out and when offered a set of tickets to go and explore Compton Verney, which is just down from us in the Cotswolds and an art gallery housed in a beautiful stately home set in the most wonderful grounds and gardens imaginable, we were excited to go.
And let me share this with you even before I get started: You absolutely MUST make plans to go! with or without children, Compton Verney must not be missed, but almost especially if you have kids, Compton Verney is everything you want in a day out with your children. Art, crafts, creation, play, gardens and adventure… all rolled into one beautiful package.
Compton Verney, a great place to bring your children
The gardens and outside areas at Compton Verney are beautiful and lend themselves to long walks at any time of year. And when you visit with children, you have the children’s adventure playground, the willow tunnels and nature trails, all there to keep your little ones happy and entertained.
Inside there’s a cafe with coffee, tea, soft drinks, sandwiches and cakes as well as a wonderful gift shop, both great places to bring to kids. And that’s where the similarities with most museums stop. Because when you venture into the gallery and the museum with your children, you feel welcomed. Staff are friendly and happy to explain and share stories, and upstairs there are rooms designed just for the kids with art materials, books, building blocks and much more. It’s a great break in your walk through the many wonderful rooms with the most wonderful art pieces displayed in montres and on the walls, and it is what gives the children a break, renewed energy and get them ready for more.
We had a fabulous day at Compton Verney with our children (then 6) and we have been back several times since.. we even had their 7th birthday party in the amazing Compton Verney Forest School.
